Why is Obama focusing on Ohio again? As it happens, Ohio is a strategic state that all presidential candidates want to have control of. Why? As one writer commented:
“Ohio is a battleground state because it has a relatively high population and thus electoral votes, but more so because it is an remarkable microcosm of the nation as whole – a mixture of urban, rural, suburban, Democrat, Republican, industrial, service, agricultural, etc, etc – it is a bellwether as well as a swing state.”
Remember, Ohio has four major cities and it’s metropolitan areas; Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton and Cleveland. Dayton and Cleveland tend to be more blue collar, Cincinnati is more or less white collar and Columbus tends to be white collar since it is the capital of the state.
Okay…the election is over. Why is Obama rearing up again? Because of major bills he wants to pass AND he wants to be reelected. However, right now his approval rating is way down in Ohio. When you shutter car plants that people have made their living in for years and years…what do you expect? A party?
Now the healthcare reform bill is on the table and Ohio democrats are saying NOT SO FAST. It will cost at least 1 trillion dollars (we get to pay for) over a period of ten years, which I think is conservative at best, also it still includes abortion. The Blue Dogs ain’t havin’ it.
From The Columbus Dispatch: Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Niles (Youngstown, Warren – Ohio), an opponent of abortion rights, floated a possible compromise. In a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Ryan urged that the final version of the bill ‘makes clear that no insurance company will be required to pay for an abortion except in extraordinary circumstances.’ Read the article here.
That is no compromise – the government should NEVER pay for abortion under any circumstances and especially making a loop hole that would allow it in the future is unacceptable.
More and more these ‘blue dog democrats’ are leaning a bit more right lately, especially where abortion is concerned.
“We remain opposed to the current bill, and we continue to meet several times a day to decide how we’re going to proceed and what amendments we will be offering as Blue Dogs on the committees,” said Rep. Mike Ross, D-Arkansas.
Looks like there’s more of a right leaning left that we gave credit for. But we’re not out of the woods yet.
Obama…there are 50 states, even though you thought there were 57. Find another one to terrorize.
