SIDEWALK CHRONICLES: Are YOU holding the stone?

So when they continued asking Him, He lifted up Himself, and said unto them, ‘He who is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.’ John 8:7

This is one ofKEEPLIFELEGAL those scriptures that everyone knows – but kind of glosses over. We think we know what it means, we’ve read it a bazillion times, and I speak for myself here…I learn something new about Jesus, His Mercy & Grace, and the evil of pious religion.

Most of us think this passage is about the woman caught in adultery but it’s way more than that. This scripture typifies what the tip of the sin iceberg really is. I would dare say, and I believe I am correct, that the woman caught in the VERY act of adultery never would have thought that she could ever be in this position. Certainly, scripture does not expound much about her or her life, and that’s too bad because I want to know more about her. However, as I mentioned earlier, this is not about her…it’s about the Mercy & Grace of our Savior EVEN when we are in the very depths of our sin.

Imagine for a moment a woman many years prior whose life was much different and never thought of such a thing to do. Could she have ever thought that her sin KEEPLIFELEGALwould be made public, ceremoniously thrown at the feet of a Man she did not know? She knew her crime would be her death penalty. Was she a widow or divorced, an orphan, simply a victim of another’s horrific battle in a life not well led?

As I think about it all, I see myself in a prior life that started with all the normalcy of any other average person. Circumstances, sometimes not our own, leads us to dark corners of a life we never thought we would be. One thing leads to the next, the next domino falls, and then another, until there’s just a pile of used up dominos.

As we stand at the sidewalk of the abortion facilities, we see women who have been ‘caught in the very act’ of sin, and how that cannot be denied or hidden because of her unplanned pregnancy. Unplanned, just like our sinful lives, with all the dominos in a pile just lying there. Not one person plans to live in such a sin state that they would kill their own unborn child, but here they are, lining up to kill. When women come to the abortion facility, it’s the final act of this passage of her sinful life…for now. She will leave broken, empty, and right back to a life that will not change because she has not met the Master.

KEEPLIFELEGALThe woman caught in adultery was looking at a bunch of men holding stones that were meant to kill her. And they really wanted to throw them…but Jesus, even knowing the Law said to stone her, gave her Mercy for her sin. The crime of adultery was forgiven, and all that was asked of her was “…go, and sin no more”, [Jn 8:11].

Women who come to the abortion facility look at us as if we hold the stones, but we do not. We hold out a hand, the same one Jesus extended to the adulterous woman. We share His Mercy & Grace, His forgiveness, His Gospel, without the condemnation they fear and expect.

When sin has brought a woman to the abortion facility along with her family, friends, coworkers, boyfriend, husband, and probably even their neighbors – all of those people who say they ‘support’ her are the ones holding the stones just waiting to throw them when she won’t comply.

Who, then, would cast the first stone at her? Usually the guiltiest, just like the pious religious that stood over the woman at the feet of Jesus. Nevertheless, this does not have to be her end, instead she can have a new life beginning with Grace that only Jesus can give:

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28
